How to Dispose of Old Underwear

Confused about what you should do with your old pants and socks? Try these easy and creative ways to dispose of your old underwear that stop them ending up in landfill.

Recycling and reselling our old clothes has never been easier than it is today, and we all know how important it is to reduce the amount of clothes going to landfill whenever we can. When it comes to what to do with old underwear, however, this can be a tricky process - especially those pairs with stains and holes that would horrify the poor charity shop workers.

With 87% of the total input into the textile industry currently ending up in landfill or an incinerator, (We Are Our Values)  throwing them in the bin should definitely not be an option. If you’re fed up with your saggy bras and greying knickers, we’re here to help you figure out a sustainable way to freshen up your underwear drawer.

When it comes to picking new underwear, choosing fabrics that are natural will make it easier for the fibres to break down. Picking underwear that’s made of 100% one fabric is the best way to make sure it’s easy to recycle once you’re finished wearing it. We all know that synthetic fibres like polyester take ages to biodegrade, so switching to natural fibres will not only give your underwear more options at end of life but also reduce microplastics they release during your wash cycle.

We’ve written a handy guide to shopping more sustainably, so have a read before hitting the shops.

Donating Old Underwear

If you’ve got brand new underwear lurking in the back of your drawer, you might be able to donate it. It’s best to check with your local charity shop or donation bin to make sure they’re happy to accept them before you drop by. Some will also accept bras and shapewear in good condition, so don’t be shy of asking what they want and don’t want. The charity Smalls for All accepts new and lightly used underwear and donates them to women in need.

Selling Old Underwear Online

If your underwear is still in tip-top condition, it could be worthwhile to sell it. There are tons of websites and apps where you can sell unworn bras and underwear, and it’s a great way to make some extra cash in a sustainable way.

If you happen to have any underwear from Bluebella that’s reached the end of its life, it’s your lucky day. We’re accepting old Bluebella undies in any condition and offering you a 10% off voucher to spend on your brand new lingerie on their site as a thank you. Click here for all the details.

Repurposing Old Underwear

Feeling crafty? There are loads of creative ways that old underwear can be repurposed. Tiny scraps can be used as stuffing for cushions or soft toys, and bigger ones can be chopped up and turned into cleaning rags. Elastic that’s still stretchy makes great elastic bands - we use them to tie up our tomato plants in the garden. If you have any underwear with pictures or patterns can be cut into squares and used for quilting projects.

Mending and Repairing Old Underwear

For undies that have a small tear or hole, pulling out your sewing kit and doing some mending could prolong their life for another year or two. Use a needle and thread for small holes, or take favourite bras and shapewear to your local tailor for tougher repairs. There are some great tutorials online for how to darn socks and tights to keep them in your wardrobe for longer.

Using a Brand’s Return & Recycle Policy

Some amazing underwear brands (AKA: our newest partner Bluebella) offer a return and recycle policy, where you can send back your old underwear to be recycled and repurposed. Ask your favourite brands if they offer this service, and if you have any Bluebella pieces, we’d love you to send them to us.

Turning to a Textile Recycling Organization

If your underwear has long passed the point of repair or repurposing, you can take it to a textile recycling organisation, who will turn your pants into new products like insulation and carpet padding, saving all kinds of fabric from going to landfill. Composting Natural Fabrics

Natural underwear made from 100% natural materials you can actually compost them. Silk, cotton, hemp, bamboo and wool are all natural fibres that will break down in a compost heap and create fertile soil for your garden. Just make sure to remove any buttons, elastic and clasps, and cut your underwear into small strips to help the process. Unfortunately fabrics that are a mix of natural fibres and elastane or polyester, can’t decompose, so make sure you check the labels.

Conclusion: Benefits of Sustainably Disposing of Old Underwear

There are plenty of sustainable ways to dispose of your old underwear that save it from being sent to landfill, and most of them are quick and easy.  By being creative and resourceful you can do your bit to reduce waste, and even save some money in the process. And next time you buy new, remember to look for natural fabrics!
