Next day delivery seemed like the best invention ever when we first heard about it years ago. No longer did we have to plan an outfit for a special event in advance, or make do with something in our wardrobe. Nowadays we can buy something online, and within 24 hours it will turn up on our doorstep. What could be so bad about that?
Well, a lot of things actually. Here at Reskinned, we made the decision not to offer next day delivery, and we’re glad we did. Yes, it means sometimes we miss out on the occasional sale, but those are the sales we want to miss out on. Do we sound crazy?
The thing is, we only want you to buy the things you actually want, and are going to wear. And when you have to wait a few days for them to arrive, you end up with less rash purchases that don’t get worn, and a wardrobe full of things you’ve consciously chosen.
The fast fashion model wants you to buy buy buy. It doesn’t matter if you’re actually going to wear the things you buy or not, or if you really want them, as long as you’re spending.
We’d rather you made the decisions you won’t go on to regret later on down the line, so you don’t waste money, or end up with things you don’t love. When it comes to your clothes, choosing the slow route over a quick fix is the best way to stay sustainable.
Our goal is to encourage our customers to shop mindfully, which means making intentional and considered choices when it comes to buying things to wear.
Stepping away from the impulse-driven nature of fast fashion is certainly not the easy route, but it makes for a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to what you wear and what you consume.
And unfortunately, next day delivery invites the opposite of that.
We want to make sure the things you buy are worth producing, in terms of quality and longevity. Next day delivery invites a culture of wear-once outfits, encouraging disposable fashion and ultimately harming our planet.
It’s a system that thrives on impulse purchases and overconsumption. How many times have you experienced the rush of checking out, only to realise when your package arrived you didn’t actually want or need anything you ordered?
We can all get swept up in it from time to time, but it’s important to think about the consequences when we make decisions about what we buy.
For most of us, it might not be something we’ve ever even considered, but checking out with next day delivery does have consequences. Here are some of the main ones you might want to think about.
The demand for quick parcels contributes to a higher turnover of clothing, leading to more things being wasted when they’re quickly discarded. In essence, the faster we try to make things happen, the more corners need to be cut, and the worse quality we end up with. That means more things ending up in the bin at a quicker speed.
The pressure for rapid production and delivery can end up causing working conditions to become exploitative for the workers involved, and practices can end up being less ethical.
The need for speed in shipping often equates to higher emissions, because the methods used to ship are often the least environmentally friendly ones. The impact of this? Accelerated climate change, air quality degradation, and contributing to global warming.
Standard shipping gives retailers a longer period of time to increase their efficiency, meaning that they can post out more parcels in one trip, and avoid unnecessary journeys. Making sure they load more parcels into each truck, and make more deliveries for each journey, which next day delivery can’t do.
By avoiding next day delivery, we can reduce the carbon footprint of our clothes. Companies can use better transport routes and not just the quickest one.
No rush means more time for thoughtful decision making, meaning clothes you’ll keep and love for longer.
The slow fashion ethos is all about quality over quantity, and by choosing standard delivery over next day, you can make sure you’re buying for the right reasons, and not just because you’re in a rush.
The goal is to avoid disposable trends, and begin to view clothes in a different way, keeping them for longer and looking after them properly. Therefore not finding yourself with impulse purchases that you end up throwing away a few months later.
Next day delivery comes at a cost, and regrettably the planet foots the bill. The rush to meet tight deadlines creates a domino effect of environmental consequences.
For companies that ship out every single day, they end up sending vans out with less parcels in them, meaning more pollution and more fuel used.
Next day delivery comes hand in hand with more packaging waste. Hasty, excessive packaging is usually needed to meet delivery deadlines, there’s less consideration for sustainability, and single-use materials are often used in abundance. That means overflowing landfills, and more natural resources needed.
Not to mention that companies that offer free next day delivery encourage shopping every day. Instead of making one meaningful purchase, you can buy things the minute you think of them, and the packaging waste stacks up.
Combined, this all adds up to mean natural resources are depleted at a faster rate, the air quality is getting worse.
At Reskinned, we recognised the environmental toll of fast shipping, and it didn’t align with our values, so we said no thanks.
By choosing not to offer next day delivery, we’re choosing to commit to the planet, be more sustainable and advocate for mindful consumption and minimal waste.
We opted out of next day delivery because we want to encourage our customers to make thoughtful and informed choices about the things that they buy. In a world of convenience, we want to slow down the shopping process.
Before you buy something, it’s helpful to answer these questions about it to make sure you’re making a mindful choice:
How necessary is this purchase?
Will it last a long time?
Is it versatile?
Do I already have something similar?
At the end of the day, the more mindful we can be, the more we can make choices that align with our values, and contribute to a more sustainable wardrobe. The more you wear something, and the longer you keep it for, the less CO2 footprint that item will have.
Instant gratification is everywhere, but it’s time we take control over our own decisions and their impact on the planet. By shopping slowly, taking time to make thoughtful purchases and reduce our impact, we can make a big difference to the world of textile waste.
